By process of lamination the glass holds together even when shattered, due to the powerful interlayer, consisting of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), set between its two or more layers of glass resulting in the glass holding together when shattered making it a great security feature the PVB layer also provides great sound insulation while blocking 99% of incoming UV rays.

Alternatively, double glazed window / door units can be made up from toughened safety glass, toughened glass is five times stronger than ordinary glass. It starts off as ordinary glass and is then put through a process of oven and chemical treatment to make it toughened. If broken, the glass shatters into hundreds of small particles that will not injure anyone instead of breaking into large sharp jagged pieces of glass. Because of the processing it goes through it needs to be ordered, and in most cases should be ready in 3-5 working days
